Celebrating One Year of ‘With Love’ and 500-Hour YTT Graduation

This weekend marks a whole year of my “With Love” project AND is the weekend I celebrate graduating my 500-hour yoga teacher training. 🥳(and yes, it really WAS 500 hours of yoga and learning and classes and teaching and boy did I love every minute!)

As the OG WLE family – I must give a huge thank YOU for witnessing & supporting this evolution. 🥰

Since May of last year things have been taking shape:

💼 registered with Yoga Alliance.

🙏 built a Guided Meditation library on Spotify & YouTube.

🧘 built a Yoga Pose Breakdown catalogue on the website & YouTube.

✨ began offering Custom Mini-Classes for those wanting short & sweet stretches for a specific ailment.

📖 opened the books for 1:1 private clients – the most customized of yoga classes!

As I graduated with my fellow yoga teachers this week, we were prompted to revisit our “why”.

Why did I put in the hundreds of hours to go deeper in my yoga & meditation knowledge? Why am I so certain that the tools of yoga & meditation are needed now more than ever? Why did I walk away from a career built in administration into the unknown?

It’s tough to capture my answer in just words. I would need to show you… show you the moments many years ago, when I went to the bathroom stall at work to cry through a panic attack.

I would need to explain how complex PTSD had my heart, mind & body on red alert for many years… and how the untying of those knots took much time.

I would have to show you how quiet the mind gets after purposeful movement, in which the body and the breath are working united.

You would need to see a fast forward movie reel of what a meditation practice looks like over many years… and I would need to show you how loud the mind was and how quiet it has become since.

I would have to show you the photo album of my relationship with myself, but the moment I realized that I needed to love who I was, and who I am and who I am becoming wouldn’t be caught on film.

Just like yoga, there is much to the journey that is intangible. It must be felt; experienced for the self.

But the journey itself has allowed me to uncover many tools. And as a compassionate, sharing person – I am determined to share these tools. If any of them can prove helpful to someone else, then it was worth it. 🧰

As much as mental health struggles feel lonely, they really are quite universal. 💞

So that dear friends, is my why.

One more huge THANK YOU for tuning in, and for being here. 🙏

Sun Salutation

an ancient practice that has stood the test of time. ☀️

Photo by Werner Pfennig on Pexels.com

This week, our yoga pose breakdown series culminated into the Surya Namaskar | Sun Saluation Yoga flow.

Watch the talk through video below:

As I step away from creating on social media platforms for a bit, and hone in on my studies… I leave you with the full yoga flow to practice.

It truly only takes a minute to flow through, and this flow ignites the breath and moves the body in all directions to start the day.

My Yoga Teacher Training ends at the end of May 2024 – where I will graduate with a 500 hour Yoga Teacher Certification.

I am excited, nervous, all of the feels etc. as I zero in on realizing a dream.

In June 2024 I will return to you, arms full of new ideas and yoga, meditation and self-study to share.

Before I go though, I want to summarize the beautiful story behind the sun salutation, since you’re here, dear friend. If you want the whole deal, check out this Yoga International deep dive article on the history of this beautiful flow. 🌄

The Sun Salutation

a love letter from student to Teacher

Traditionally, a student and teacher relationship was sacred and revered… to the point where a student would be indebted to the teacher as a sort of “graduation fee”. (guru dakshina)

There is a beautiful story in the Yoga Sutras, that explains the mythological story behind the sun salute flow. According to the tale – Hanuman (the great monkey hero of the epic Ramayana) was enchanted by the Sun (Surya) since birth… in fact he mistook the sun for a mango as a baby and tried to eat it. The gods interfered and it was decided that Hanuman needed a teacher. That teacher was none other than Surya himself… who told Hanuman he had no time for a student.

Hanuman was determined to be Surya’s student, committing to racing across the sky backwards, as he faced his teacher and absorbed his teachings. (In fact, if you were to practice a few sun salutation flows one after the other, you would find yourself shuffled backwards on your mat!)

Hanuman learned from Surya up to his graduation point, at which point Surya told him there was no fee…. teaching a worthy student was reward enough. Hanuman was humbled, and told his teacher he could only offer his gratitude and “namaskars” (respectful greetings). And so, the Surya Namaskar was born… an homage to the sun, with a respectful greeting.

This moving prayer of thanks, has withstood hundreds of years, and is still practiced to this day.

Try it out for yourself, and see how you feel! If you don’t want to follow a video, the audio cues have been uploaded to my Spotify, so you can just pop in a pair of headphones and flow through the yoga asana as many times as you would like! 🥰

I am so exited to see you all again in June!!!

My nose will be in the books between now and then, but please reach out if you want to discuss a CUSTOM yoga / meditation class! I will always make time for custom requests. 🙏

I offer a free 15 minute consultation to discuss how yoga / meditation would look in your life. Please fill out the form on my offers page if you’re interested – I love to chat yoga any day! 😊

Wishing you an incredible weekend, and couple months ahead.

You will be sure to hear from me again.

Social Media is Fake

But yoga isn’t. 😉

I am loving the trend going about, in which people “expose” themselves on social media, reminding us that the curated feeds and touched up photos aren’t anyone’s real life.

Yoga is not about a matching pastel LuluLemon set (not that I don’t love me some Lulu) and you don’t need a sleek black onesie from Taper & Teak* to try a few yoga poses out. (* Taper & Teak being the incredible Winnipeg based clothing company I snagged my black suit from.)

The same goes for me: my every day yoga practice is done in sweatpants, pj’s, old t-shirts, with chipping nailpolish and my hair up in a half bun.

I can not emphasize enough, that yoga is NOT a flexibility competition.

In fact, as my personal yoga practice has evolved, I have learned that while I am naturally flexible – my focus needs to lean on the strenth building poses more. My hubsand for example, has the opposite experience: being naturally strong, and gravitating to weight lifting over stretching… he is seeing that joining me for some evening stretches helps him recover quicker and finds him more limber.

Yoga isn’t even about “fancy” poses.

The magic is way way simpler than that! 🙏

Just the act of bringing your attention back to the body & reconnecting with the breath, brings you to the present – that is yoga.

It draws your awareness into the moment you find yourself in.

It has the effect of “coming home” to the body, to the self.

You can have the most profound and calming moment, just moving with the breath from Mountain Pose to Extended Standing Pose.

Letting the repeated motion soothe the body & mind at once.

(Video linked below to give you a visual.)

Yoga physically lines you back up, as you are aiming to bring the hips parallel for example. The attention is on even and symmetrical movement in this form of exercise. This physical lining back up has a funny way of also lining the thoughts and emotions back up too. 🤔

The beauty of a yoga practice too, is that you are invited to play like a child. The further I get in my yoga teacher training, the less I worry over “proper alignment” … it’s become more about moving intuitively. Experimenting and laughing when I fall, so I get back up again and try again. Resilient.

As I practice listening to the body, I can hear more clearly the request for an extra stretch here or there. I understand too, that my hesitation to hold a Warrior II stance, is due to my tendency to pick the flowy poses – and that I do indeed need to override the self here – and practice some strength building.

Curiously and compassionately.

Meeting the self.

With Love.

So yeah, social media is fake. But yoga is not.

If you’re wanting to start a yoga practice but you’re not sure where to start – book a free 15 minute consultation with me on my website. I am always thrilled to talk yoga! 💗

Thank you for joining me for another blog pose this week. I hope that with each article here on my corner of the internet, I can share some of the light that I soak up from this practice. ☀️

Wishing you a sunny long weekend.

Happy Easter to those who celebrate. 🐇

Channel Check Meditation | Revisited

Happy #meditationmonday 💗

Today on the #WLE channels we are revisiting an old favourite #guidedmeditation of mine. 🙏

📻 The Channel Check Meditation got a little remix.

As I’ve learned and grown with this little meditation series, I am finding new ways to make things just a wee bit more polished. ✨

This meditation was just begging for a more soothing background soundtrack. 🧖‍♀️ 🎶

What do you think? Did you recognize the replay guided meditation right away? 🙏🤭

Happy meditating friends! ☺️
